10 Tips For Building The Best Version of Yourself

From our childhoods to the time we become adults, we hear the common motivational phrase to “Do your best!” However, what does it really mean to do your best? What does that look like on a day-to-day basis? In a world where standards are raising, everything is more complicated and more competitive, if we’re not doing our best…it feels like we can get left behind. But, being our best should not be a burden. Instead, it should be an opportunity and it should be fun.

Countless entrepreneurs allow the achievement of goals and ‘having’ more things to consume their precious time, energy and money. That might mean fancy cars, houses, holidays, new experiences, designer clothing or the latest technological gadget.

The problem lies with entrepreneurs wanting to remain the same, use the least amount of effort possible and give very little in return while expecting to ‘have’ more. Long-Lasting, sustainable success requires becoming a better version of ourselves and contributing to the world in a meaningful way.

Here are 10 tips for building the best version of yourself:

1. Compliment Yourself

Every morning before you go on with your daily routine, take a couple of minutes to compliment yourself. Whether you compliment your outfit, haircut or how you recently completed a task using your unique skill sets, giving yourself a little emotional boost will make you happy. And when you’re happy with yourself, that emotion can be contagious to those around you.

2. Be Ready To Shred Your Old Self Completely

Becoming the best version of yourself means that you’re going to move away from where you are, so you must be willing to shred your old self. When you’re raising your bar, you’re essentially creating a gap between you and the people around you. Your old self is going to resist that, but don’t let the resistance get its way. Let go of certainty and embrace uncertainty instead. Nothing is certain, after all. The earlier you realize this, the more you can improve.

3. Read Something Inspirational

Spiritually minded individuals stay close to the Creator by spending a few minutes a day contemplating scripture. If holy writings aren’t your thing, countless high achievers credit the great books they’ve read for inspiring them to strive for greatness. You only need to devote five minutes to this practice.

4. Acknowledge Your Fear, Then Tame It Like A Master

Most people are unable to even take action because of fear. Don’t let it limit you. Admit that you’re fearful, but proceed anyway. Anyone who says they have no fear is not telling you the full story. The smartest individuals in the world have the ability to control their fears. The things you’re looking forward to could be just right at the edge of your comfort zone. Be courageous. It’s okay to make mistakes, don’t let that keep you down.

5. Let Go Of Anger

Letting go of anger is easier said than done. While anger is a perfectly normal emotion, you can’t let it fester. When this happens, you may make unwise decisions and more importantly, it may affect your health. Research suggests pent-up anger can cause digestive problems, difficulty sleeping and even heart disease.

6. Spend Time In Nature

Researchers have found that spending time in nature improves cognitive functioning, attention and memory. Urban environments are filled with stimulation that requires attention. Nature on the other hand has gives you the ability to breathe fresh air and to be alone with your thoughts.

7. Vigorous Self-Education

The best people never stop learning. If you want to be the best version of yourself, do what they do. Never let school interfere with your education. Actively educate yourself about topics which can bring you to your most excellent height and put all your heart into it.

8. Amplify Your Strengths

If you have strengths, amplify them. If you have specific weaknesses, build a team with complementary skills to cover your weakness. Don’t waste too much time correcting your weaknesses when someone else can handle the part for you. Focus on your strengths and see how you can achieve the most using the things you’re great at.

9. Stop Criticizing Others, Even In Your Mind

This is easier said than done, considering what psychologists call “negativity bias.” Even people with the sunniest personalities have what scientists call a “positive-negative asymmetry” and will pay more attention to negative rather than positive information.

Because this bias happens at the fundamental information processing level, it’s present in everything we do. From how we react to events (good or bad), how we develop trust in relationships (or don’t) and how we learn, everything is dependent on how we process each situation.

10. Be Macro-Patient & Micro-Aggressive

Live your every day to the fullest by doing what’s necessary. Learn to differentiate what’s within and beyond your circle of control. Once you’ve done your best, what happens will happen. Be patient and continue grinding. As long as you’re working in the right direction, things will work out. But most importantly of all, enjoy the journey because it’s going to be far more special than the destination.
