With the resources available nowadays, anyone can essentially start a blog rather quickly. However, starting your own blog is just the first step. The second and much harder step is driving a steady stream of traffic to your blog without spending a lot of money.

 

 

Without spending a single dollar on marketing my blog, I’ve been able to get hundreds of thousands of unique visitors to my articles.

There are two types of readers that you will come across on your website. There are those that are constantly sharing your content and then another group of individuals who are just reading, but not sharing.

I quickly found out that the younger audience on my site was more likely to share articles. Thus, I began crafting more content that would target them specifically.

 

 

Get Involved In The Community

 

Given the number of blogs that are out there in the blogosphere, you don’t have to worry too much about ‘competitors’. The reason is that the same person is very likely to read multiple blogs.

 

 

You can reach out to other bloggers in your sphere and ask if you can guest post on their site. It helps them because they are getting more content while you’re writing is being presented in front of a new audience. Find ways to work with other blogs to create mutually beneficial relationships.

 

 

Make Your Blog SEO Friendly

 

Most blogs are built on WordPress. There are numerous SEO tools available that help you get your content visible on the search engines. I personally love using Yoast SEO, which is a free plugin available for WordPress.

 

 

By installing these plugins, you are easily able to customize URL’s, meta titles, meta descriptions and keywords for your article. These are all of the vital elements that help you rank on the search engines.

 

 

Actively Share Your Posts On Social Media

 

Social media is a great way to promote your content through the web. It is vital that you have profiles created on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google + so that you can share your newest blog posts with your audience.

 

 

It’s not always about getting unique visitors to your blog, but rather getting a large base of loyal readers. Social media sites such as Twitter can help you keep your audience close to you so that they know whenever you post a new blog article.

Twitter has a trending section on the left that shows you the most popular things that are taking place at a specific time. If you’re looking for a higher click-through-rate, you need to include action words that feature verbs and adverbs in your posts. 10. Be Authentic 

 

The key to Twitter is that a ton of different personalities are active on it. You need to be original and authentic with the way you post your content on that network. If people don’t like you, they won’t do business with you. As crazy as it sounds, it’s a statement filled with honesty. People always say, “Well Mark Zuckerberg was an asshole and look how far it took him.”

 

 

The truth of the matter is that people hated doing business with these guys. Many people actually pass on opportunities with people like that. The ones who did business with him were skeptical and had to put up with a lot of stuff.

Give A Shit

 

I respect people that are honest and actually give a shit about their craft. You don’t need to be the smartest or flashiest person in the world, but you need to give a damn about what you do.

I call those individuals sleazy and that is an automatic reason for me not to do with business with them. If you’re actually honest, care about other people’s best interest and put your 100% in on every deal, people will be more than happy to work with you.

 

 

Listen 

 

If you want people to hear you out, you need to reciprocate the same action to them. Active listening is defined as something where you respond to things that people say with timely verbal and/or nonverbal reinforcements.

 

 

If you can master the skill of actually listening and communicating that to your clients, they’ll be happy with what they have. Look at people directly while they speak and be prompt with your responses to their questions.

 

 

Don’t Be Too Serious

 

Being professional is important, but there is a line that you shouldn’t cross. I enjoy having the ability to deal with another professional who isn’t scared of talking about personal things as well. If you’re too serious, the relationship is strictly formal.

 

 

Well-liked individuals do a good job of getting personal without really getting too personal. You can break down some basic walls and barriers by starting some small talk. I’m always asking people how their day went, what they have planned after and I create conversation using those answers.

 

 

Be Hospitable 

 

If someone comes in for a meeting, I expect them to have some sort of decency and respect for me and the environment they are in. Don’t be a messy slob that comes in and makes a mess of the place before leaving.

 

 

Your manners, politeness and cleanliness are all things that others will look at. If you’re going to eat something, do it but don’t be a pig.

 

 

Reach Out

 

Lastly, this is something that many people never seem to understand. You cannot get a meeting or score a deal with someone unless you make the effort. Reach out to initiate the conversation and you will be surprised at what you can come up with.

 

 

Respect people if they aren’t interested and make sure you aren’t too pushy, but always make the effort to try. You won’t ever know unless you try.

The first thing I did when creating my blog was look at what similar bloggers in my niche were writing about. There are also tools such as BuzzSumo.com where you can enter a domain and see what the most popular pages on that website are.

 

 

When you find out what your competitors are writing about and which of their posts have done the best, it doesn’t mean you go and replicate that exact content. Instead, you use their successes to give you creative inspiration of your own.

 

 

Ask Your Audience

Starting a blog is probably one of the greatest decisions you can make. I see more and more blogs popping up on the internet, but they’re still making the same mistakes.

1. Attracting The Wrong Audience

 

The other day, I saw the most ridiculous thing possible. I went to a blog and the guy was a web developer, but his branding was targeting golfers. It’s fine to blog about something that isn’t your profession, but every third post of this guys had something to do with coding.

 

 

If you attract the wrong audience, your traffic numbers will be horrible. If you’re going to write about golf, keep it strictly about golf. I’m pretty sure the percentage of golf players to web developers is extremely low. There is no relevancy between the two topics.

 

 

2. Being Really Inconsistent

 

Out of all honesty, I have had a lot of trouble with this aspect of blogging as well. Starting your own blog is a huge commitment and many people don’t realize that until a few months after they start their site.

 

 

I promised myself I would try posting 2-3 articles each week no matter what happened. In the last couple months, I’ve gotten extremely busy and have a hard time juggling my posting schedule. If you do start a blog, you want to be consistent with the type of content you post and how often you post it.

 

 

3. Focusing On Quantity Instead Of Quality

 

It’s not about how many articles you post. It’s truly about the quality of each of the articles that you do share. Many people think that if they spam the hell out of their site and share 40-50 posts a month, they’ll get a ton of traffic.

 

 

However, that’s a myth. Some of the most successful bloggers I know only post 3-4 times a month. When they do post, their quality is so amazing that they absolutely kill it.

 

 

4. Poor Writing

 

Before you can start a blog, you need to make sure that you touch up on your writing skills. Make sure that you brush up on your basic writing skills and have a strong focus on editing each of your posts.

 

 

Whether you hire someone to edit your posts or you do it yourself, you need to make your writing as strong as possible. An easy way to turn people away from a site is by having a blogger that can’t communicate their thoughts effectively.

 

 

 

5. Poor Headlines 

 

Your headline is literally everything. Think about it this way, if a movie trailer sucked….would you watch the movie? No chance in hell.

 

 

There’s a reason why production companies spend a large portion of their budget on just perfecting the movie trailer. Your headline is the same thing. I recommend writing down 10-12 different headlines for each article. Ask your friends and family which of the headlines would get them to click through to the post. Take those votes and make your final decision afterwards.

 

 

6. Selling Yourself Way Too Much

 

The one thing that I learned early on by starting this blog was that selling yourself is not going to make your website successful. Instead of focusing on how I can make money off of my readers, I just created a platform where I want to help people for free.

 

 

If people find my services helpful, they will take the next step on their own. Don’t start a blog just because you heard it’s a good way to sell yourself. It’s really not. Your audience isn’t going to like you for it. Focus on producing great content that will give people a stronger connection to you.

 

 

7. You Don’t Invite Engagement

 

Does your blog have a section for people to chime in on your post and write comments? Do you make it easy for your audience to share your post on social media? These are some key things that will help your blog be successful.

 

 

Many people disable the comments section on their blog or put a small share button at the end of the article. On my blog, you’ll notice I integrated Disqus (a popular comment platform) and I have a share bar that follows the user throughout. If they do want to share the piece or respond, it’s readily available.

 

 

8. You Don’t Have A Good Design

 

For some reason, I have gone to some blogs that have completely grouped up a ton of content in one space. If I can’t read your blog without being annoyed, I’m not going to read it. I don’t care how good your content is.

 

 

Make your content easy on the eyes for your audience and make it inviting. If you don’t, your bounce rate will automatically increase.

 

 

9. Not Optimizing Your Posts For SEO

 

Believe it or not, optimizing your posts to get search engine traffic is really possible. Content is still one of the easiest ways to get traffic from the search engines. However, many bloggers totally abandon this idea.

 

 

The first step is creating keyword rich titles. Go on the Google Ad Words Tool and see what things people are searching for, can you change your title to make it apply to that niche? Also, make your URL’s match the keyword you’re targeting. Last but not least, I installed WordPress SEO by Yoast on my blog to help with the SEO.

 

 

10. Being Fake

 

If you read about a blog making 6 figures in the pet industry, it doesn’t mean you go create a pet blog. Many people are guilty of doing this and it’s a horrible idea. If you try creating a blog without being authentic, people will catch on.

 

 

Someone else may be successful in another industry because they are passionate and knowledgeable about it. For someone else with no experience to come in and reciprocate that success will be extremely difficult. Don’t chase the money, chase your own passions.

Whether you start your own blog, publication or just decide to share stuff on the side, it’s all about maximizing your efforts. I learned quickly that it isn’t the amount of time you spend but rather how you spend your time that will make your content marketing efforts successful.

1. Infographics

 

Infographics are really awesome. They take information or data and present it in a really visual way. Not only are they easy to view because of how little time you need to spend, but they tend to also get shared far more often.

 

 

Whether you decide to take popular infographics from the internet or decide to create your own, you can get a lot of traffic by sharing this type of content. Be sure that you use an info graphic when you want to communicate an interesting statistic, research, or point of data.

 

 

2. Pictures 

 

When I tried marketing DailyMondo.com and trying to get it to go viral through Facebook, I realized my text posts were underperforming. Then, I had the brilliant idea of trying to share images.

 

 

DING DING DING! I had a winner. From my preliminary research, I found that images, memes and other types of photos relevant to your audience tend to perform a lot better. You get more shares and more views.

 

 

3. Opinion Posts 

 

When I first started my blog, I didn’t think anyone gave a shit about what I had to say. Turns out, a lot of people care what others have to say. Whether they agree with you or not, it doesn’t really matter.

 

 

The thing that matters is whether or not you’re drawing attention towards your content and getting people to get involved. I learned from my blog that my opinionated posts tend to have the most comments and the most shares.

 

 

4. Videos

 

Videos are probably the holy grail of media content that you can share on the internet. After experimenting with a bunch of different media types on DailyMondo, we quickly realized that video was the best choice.

 

 

Why? Well, videos tend to keep the audience engaged for the longest period of time and require them to do the least amount of work. Whether you decide to make your own videos or share existing videos, it’s a great way to drive some extra eyeballs towards your content.

 

 

5. Lists 

 

I don’t know what it is about lists, but they tend to convert really well. Some of the most shared posts in the whole internet have just been simple lists that had some really captivating content.

 

 

If you have a topic or genre that would be really good for creating a list with, give it a shot. Here’s the first ever list style post I did and it still gets traffic until this day. The post featured 50 great quotes about entrepreneurship here.

While it is crucial to note that John is one of the most hard-working individuals ever who redefined this space by doing 1 interview a day, this type of content has a lasting effect. The interviewed person tends to share their success with their audience while others looking for help indulge themselves in the content.

 

 

7. Current Events

 

With social media sites taking a strong focus on the ‘Trending’ section, you can drive a lot of traffic to your page by timing posts really well. For example, my friend released a post about Mayweather and why an education was important no matter how successful you were just weeks ago.

 

 

He released the post right after 50 Cent offered Mayweather a huge chunk of cash if he would read him a page from Harry Potter. Since the topic was hot, people clicked through to his post at a ridiculous rate. He generated over 50,000 hits that weekend!

 

 

8. The Authentic Stuff

 

At the end of the day, you can only fake so much of it. At some point, you need to come up with original content that is real and appealing to your audience.

 

 

This content can be the hardest to curate, but it’s probably going to give you the most long-term value. My blog is an example of authentic content I share from a lot of my personal experiences.

In this article, I share my tips on how to be taken seriously as a young businessman. It has its challenges being young in the business world, but if you navigate your way through it properly, you can easily succeed.

 

Being in business at a young age is a huge advantage, but it also requires some special skills to navigate yourself through the waters. I started my journey in the business world at the age of 17.

 

 

When I started, I faced a lot of challenges that had to do with my age. It was really tough getting people to take me seriously while also looking past my baby face. However, I eventually learned the tricks of the trade and mastered the skill.

 

 

In this article, I share my tips on how to be taken seriously as a young businessman:

 

 

1. Know Your Sh*t

 

Older business professionals have a good reason for looking past younger individuals because there is reason for doubt. I know many young people who have tried going in without knowing a thing about what they’re talking about.

 

 

Before you can be taken seriously, you need to make sure you actually talk the talk. Do your research on your clients, industries and anything else that will help you become successful. Master your pitches and be sure that you don’t BS anything.

 

 

2. Be Confident

 

If you let someone run you over because they are older, you’re not going to be very successful in the business world. While I was respectful towards my clients, I still made sure they knew that I was confident.

 

 

If people didn’t like my terms or my prices, I wasn’t going to change it for them. My business policies were firm and I wasn’t going to let anyone walk all over me. Be confident and don’t be scared to make the tough decisions.

 

 

3. Learn To Listen

 

Another reason why young people aren’t often taken seriously is because they have a hard time listening. They are too focused on getting their word in and don’t give a shit about what others have to say.

 

 

The biggest skill I learned early on was that I had to listen. By listening, I was able to learn about so much stuff that I probably would have missed out on otherwise. Shut up and hear everyone out, it’ll help you get really far.

 

 

4. Dress Professionally

 

Mark Zuckerburg can wear a hoodie and shorts because he’s worth billions of dollars. Unless you just created a billion dollar social network, treat your peers with respect. You’re not going to a party after school, you’re trying to close deals.

 

 

Respect your clients, peers and others by dressing appropriately. If you want to be taken serious, you need to have the proper look. It’s really basic stuff.

 

 

5. Get To The Point

 

When I began pitching clients early on, I realized I was really bad at it. I had a tough time getting to the point as I wanted to fluff everything up and it was a result of everything I had learned at school.

 

 

People in the business world don’t have time. The most important thing in the world is time and business people understand that. Don’t waste their time, get to the point. They’ll be happier for it and they’ll actually listen.

I have said this statement many times, change and comfort don’t always go hand-in-hand. More often than not, you have to choose between comfort and change to be really successful.

 

 

When you pursue your dreams, you’re going to have to do tons of things that are new and some of these things may make you uncomfortable. At the end of the day, it’s just a few of the barriers you have to deal with as you aim to make a huge change in your life.

 

 

2. You’ll Have Doubts From Time To Time

 

Making a huge change in your life is never easy. Ask any successful entrepreneur, athlete or musician and they’ll tell you the same thing – they had doubts and things got real tough during their journey.

 

 

Nevertheless, having doubts from time to time are absolutely normal. You only truly mess up when you let those doubts run you or dreams. You can’t give up and you can’t let the negatives stop you from tackling your dreams head on.

 

 

3. You’ll Find Your True Friends

 

When you do something unordinary, you tend to find out who your real friends are. Will your friends be your support system or will they antagonize you for your decisions?

 

 

It’s sometimes really hard figuring out who your real friends are, but you’d rather know than be left in the darkness about it. True friends are there for you regardless of what happens.

 

 

4. You Will Have To Make Tough Decisions

 

The toughest part about being an entrepreneur for me often times has been making the right decision. Each decision tends to have a huge impact on my businesses and I feel like I have to make the perfect decision.

 

 

If you’re best friend is employed in the company, but not producing….what will you do? Will you sacrifice your own feelings above the companies? That’s a recipe for failure. Tough decisions like that will come up and you have to be prepared to take the hard route.

 

 

5. You’ll Surely Test Your Patience

 

There is no one path or road to success. Pursuing your dreams is often difficult and filled with tons of obstacles. If you plan on being an ‘overnight’ success, you’re in for another thing. Chasing your dreams will truly test your patience.

 

 

For me, I’ve committed 100% to the entrepreneurial route. When I was younger, it was tough. I was all in on my business while I saw my friends transferring to top Universities and some were even graduating. I had to stay patient and remain focused to see things change.

 

 

6. You’ll Learn How Talented You Truly Are

 

Growing up, I felt like I was really stupid. School bored me and I was disinterested, which caused me to get really bad grades. As a result, I thought I was stupid and a complete failure.

 

 

Then, I ventured out on my own and began teaching myself the ropes of business and life. After finding some success along the way, I quickly learned that I was a lot more intelligent and talented than I had ever known.

 

 

7. You’ll Wish You Had Started Earlier

 

No matter how old you are, you always regret starting so late when you do find your true purpose in life. I started as an entrepreneur at 17, which many people are extremely jealous of. However, I’m always regretful I didn’t start when I was 12 or 13.

 

 

Pursuing your dreams can be exciting and truly thrilling. Cherish each day and continue pushing to the top.
